  • ¾ lb lean ground beef
  • ½ cup minced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 (6.5 oz) cans tomato sauce
  • 2 (6 oz) cans tomato paste
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tbsp white sugar
  • 4 tbsp chopped fresh parsley, divided
  • 1½ tsp dried basil leaves
  • 1½ tsp salt, divided
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp fennel seeds
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 16 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ lb mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • ¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

Follow these steps in order for best results.

  1. Step 1

In a Dutch oven, cook the sweet Italian sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until browned.

  2. Step 2

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water. Season with sugar, 2 tablespoons of parsley, basil, 1 teaspoon of salt, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and black pepper. Simmer covered for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.

  3. Step 3

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles in boiling water for 8-10 minutes. Drain and rinse with cold water.

  4. Step 4

In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese with the egg, remaining 2 tablespoons of parsley, and ½ teaspoon of salt.

  5. Step 5

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread 1.5 cups of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.

  6. Step 6

Layer 6 noodles lengthwise over the meat sauce, slightly overlapping. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, top with a third of the mozzarella slices, and spoon 1.5 cups of meat sauce over the mozzarella.

  7. Step 7

Sprinkle with ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese. Repeat the layers and finish with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

  8. Step 8

Cover with foil (sprayed with cooking spray to prevent sticking) and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes.

  9. Step 9

Let the lasagna rest for 15 minutes before serving to help it set.
